Nakhon Sakon (Thai: www.ná(?).k????n]) is one of Thailand's northeast states. Neighbouring regions are (from the northern direction clockwise) Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Kalasin and Udon Thani. Sakon Nakhon is the capitol. Sakon is derived from the Sanskrit term sacala (Devanagari: ???) and means "whole", "whole" or "total", and the Sanskrit nakhon means "city" or "city" (Devanagari: ???).

The name of the provinces therefore means verbatim "city of cities". The Khmer is the Khmer tongue for the Sakor Nokor region. It is located on the Khorat Plateau, not far from the Mekong River. Nong Han is the largest in northeastern Thailand, near the town of Sakon Nakhon, and a favourite holiday destination for locals.

Phu Phan mountains border the southern provinces. It is subdivided into 18 Distrikte (Amphoe).
