This is the best starting point to discover the Nelson Lakes National Park and the Honigtau wood. Located on the outskirts of Lake Rotoiti in the Nelson area, the town of St. Arnaud is an excellent starting point for hikers and anglers in Nelson Lakes National Park.
In the Visitors' Center of the Nature Conservation Department you can inform yourself about the ecological aspects of the Honigtau-Buchenwald; the center also offers guided tours to the regional hikes, which sometimes take several workdays. Lake Rotoroa and Lake Rotoiti are both known for their delicate brook trouts.
Hiking and Hitchhiking in Nelson Lakes National Park
The hike rises constantly through the Buchenwald to an altitude of over 1650 m. Over the bush line (1400 m) after a two-hour ascent, there are magnificent vistas from the Rocks which take their name from a parachute-shaped pebble bed in the northern part. From here it's another 30 mins uphill to the crest line, where you'll be awarded with stunning scenic views: eastwards down the Wairau Valley, northwards to Mt Richmond National Park, westwards to Kahurangi National Park and Buller Valley, and southwards to the remainder of Nelson Lakes National Park.
It begins in the east of Kerr Bay, on the outskirts of Lake Rotoiti in St. Arnaud. Saint-Arnaud is 88 km from Nelson on SH6, 129 km from Picton on SH63, 157 km from Wesport on SH6 and SH63 and 350 km from Christchurh on SH65 and SH6.
On the lower hillsides, large copper beeches dominate, with a sound sub-roof of other types, such as the deciduous tree andputaputaw?t?. Above, the hornbeam takes over and eventually the winter-hard hornbeam. Notice how the hornbeam becomes more and more atrophied the higher you rise to the bush line. Tree soft tufts of ice, subalpine bushes and, even higher, spherical herbs.
They bloom in early and early summers, giving a magnificent representation of golden and whites. Other glacier events at higher altitudes are witnessed by the cut-off foothills of the St. Arnaud Range. The Nelson Lakes National Park is located in an area of the Alps - it can freeze all year round.
Scratching sand flies can impair the lake experiences, especially in the hot summers - protect your sensitive skins and put on a high-quality insecticide.
