Rotuman Festival 2018 in Fiji
Visit this annual vernacular culture and society festival on Rotuma between December and January. Throughout the festival, groups of Fijians will go from one home to another to amuse and "ask" their homes. It' looks like a caroling race in which crowds visit homes with ukeles and percussion, sing and dance and invite the host to join in.
There' s a long custom of going home very early at nights or in the early mornings. Native speakers who have already been asleep are woken up by the sounds of song and applauding drum. Fara don't let the humans know they're comin'; this custom is improvised in the outdoors.
Fiji, Rotuma: The Cruising Notes -
s Tuvalu paid a visit to Rotuma in August 2017 and published some very useful information about travel. For their 12 month stay in Fiji Rotuma Stephen & Selena Steddy from SV Westward II from Australia have put together very useful and clear travel information. ROTUMA: Now a harbour of Entry (we were only the fifth ship to/from the island), it provides a protected mooring near the small shipyard (Oinafa Cove, on the NE side of the island).
Because of the unforeseen wx, we arrived on a Sunday breakfast and had to foot the bill for extra hours as they were insisting on getting on the ship and checking us in this Sunday instead of resting on the plane and checking in on Monday! There' s a north breeze in the little harbour.
Around the archipelago we saw many beautiful sands. Anchoring became very risky as large rolls came in. Later in the evening we agreed to hold on to the docks with 2 anchor..... we ended the whole evening, with the motor running, when a mad initial flow at the docks caused chaos..... the winds turned more NW and giant ripples rocks the ship.
With the first ray of sunlight, tired and full of adrenalin, we walked off the beach (milder winds, but still a lot of waves) around the SE area of the beach to await the northern one. We were able to get back to the harbour after 2 working nights to pick up one of our anchor and report to the authorities.
In this horrible port incident we were fortunate enough to get the help of Felipe, the real seafarer of Rotuma! It was one of the few places to anchor that was so awkward or hazardous that we were looking forward to a 9-day crossing! These are some short hints about Rotuma, effective at least in November 2010.
The Rotuma is a vegetable farm that grows its own foods with enough extras for exports. I' ve been informed that this is one of the reason why Fiji has made Rotuma another terminal. At the north-eastern end of the isle, near the town Oinafa, there is a new harbour. A good mooring in the sands of the small harbour for several yachts.
Safely in most circumstances except any North West well. They should be prepared to go to the seas if a north-westerly situation appears. See the Herr-John-in-Fiji file in Scribd for great navigation information. Release in: The same regulations, tolls, hourly rates as in the other Fiji harbours. They will be picked up at the port by custom, migration and medical officials and must be brought to your ship.
The output release is slightly more complicated unless you have a Vodafone or Digicell mobile telephone. Vodafone cover on the docks. They were very kind and supportive. You will find the administration at the other end of the isle at the airfield. Oinafa's boss was off the isle when I got there.
but you can ask any of the villagers in Oinafa and they can guide you. It was very supportive, arranging a lorry for an insular trip that I liked very much. He' got a mobile and he can get in touch with the authorities for a release date. You like your kava (Fiji beers, grog) in Rotuma.
I' m very sympathetic to Rotuma and her group. It' different from the Fiji situation. Nobody seems to know why Rotuma has this issue in comparison to other Fiji isles. As already said, but it is recommended to repeat, the port is perilous when a North Westwell is underway.
