Pukarua
BucharuaAtoll, France Polynesia, Pukarua
Around noon we arrived at the secluded Pukarua Alm, our goal for the afternoons. On the lee side of the archipelago, just outside the small village of Marautagaroa, we found good protection. With the Zodiac, the remainder of us went on land through a seamount incision that gave us simple entry to the city's cementpier.
There, we were welcomed by the native townspeople, who welcomed us with floral songs as a group of players played Polish melodies on their guitar and other stringstrings. There was a wonderful diversity of native blossoms and pleated leaf. Many inquisitive kids and native hounds came together to observe the peculiar festivals around our arrivals.
We started at the jetty and went through the small, quiet city, past the cathedral and a beautiful graveyard lined with high palm trees. One of the roads soon took us to the other end of the city, where the path merged into an attractive sandy shore next to the inner Laguna of the Atolls.
A number of indigenous men practised the classical Tuamotuan sports by casting javelins on a single piece of rock high up on a hight. A number of people volunteered to try this demanding game, but only a native could impale the spitfire. The older ladies showed their sleek hips, while the lovely kids did their best to follow their friendly older masters.
The kids were playing and laughing in the near-by blue Laguna, and soon many of us came to the mild, tranquil one. Finally we all strolled through the small city back to the jetty, where our Zodiacs brought us back to the boat just before sundown.
