ULAANBAATAR, July 6, 2018 - Five community leadership members from across Asia and the Pacific have been recognized for their inspiring work on catastrophe preparedness in their community. Last evening at an award ceremony of the Asia Lokal Leader Forum for Disaster Resilience (ALL4DR) at the AYRC.

Atlas of the Pacific is a collaborative effort of the Pacific Community (SPC) and the World Research Program (WFP). Atlas 2018 provides a geographical survey of the key questions affecting nutritional stability in the Pacific Island States (PICs). The atlas is structured into nine subject areas and offers the readers information and know-how about the causes and results of nutritional safety and health in the area.

In the context of the on-going efforts to support disability-friendly relief efforts in the Pacific region, this strategy paper sets out priorities for preparedness, management and coping with disasters. In Vanuatuu' s capitol, Port Vila, there is space for 10 giant ship bins full to the rim with thrown -away goods and rotten-life. That is the rest of the vast mountain of funds sent to the South Pacific nations after the worst storms that hit the isolated archipelago almost three years ago.

Vanuatu collected funds that were used to fill 77 large pedestals after Cyclone Pam tore through the land in March 2015. Faced with global warming, the global economy is still witnessing more and more catastrophes. The first half of 2017 alone saw 149 catastrophes in 73 nations with 3,162 casualties, affecting 80 million persons and resulting in an estimate of 32.4 billion US dollars. Many Pacific island states find catastrophes such as hurricanes and tidal waves all too often.

Of the 15 most threatened by catastrophic events in the world, four are Pacific island states and Vanuatu is always in the lead. Endangered African, Pacific and Caribbean populations are now benefitting from enhanced early warnings of severe climatic conditions as part of an global initiative to strengthen resistance and adapt to global warming.

Having learned harsh lesson, the Pacific Island states exercise greater oversight when catastrophes strikes. The Pacific Islanders are working with boldness and determination to strengthen the resistance of their local populations and catalyze world action to end the world' s CCS.

If a catastrophe hits, everyone wants to help, but the false contribution at the right moment can hamper the aid, rather than support it. In recent years, Pacific schooling has been used by schoolchildren, family and IDPs as unscheduled and sometimes long-term shelter during catastrophes, by schoolchildren, and IDPs.

Both Vanuatu and Fiji are facing climate-related catastrophes that are constantly on the increase, both in terms of their extent and number. The two countries have been hit by a series of catastrophic hurricanes over the last three years, led by Cyclone Pam, which hit Vanuatu in 2015, and Cyclone Winston, which hit Fiji in 2016.

ActionAid is responding by helping Fiji and Vanuatu to support the community's effort to increase its resistance to growing catastrophes. Port-Vila, September 15, 2017: Today, some 2,500 Erromango residents are being handed over to Erromango municipalities through the Ministry of Land and Natural Resources and its affiliates, the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFAT), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and CAR, which has formally rehabilitated and upgraded local wastewater and drinking and drinking infrastructure.

VANUATU, PORT VILA (August 10, 2017) - The Governing Board of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) is making a combined sum of 8.2 million dollars available to pursue the rebuilding, redevelopment and climatic protection of the streets affected by Cyclone Pam. Vanuatu government is also funding $1.2 million to the program.

Catastrophes have been causing the deaths of one million people since 2000. One of the world's biggest relief organizations, it is one of the first to react to catastrophes and the last to abandon them. However, there is also a great deal of work we do to prepare churches for catastrophes to mitigate their effects.
