Cardio-circulatory and diabetic deaths in a population undergoing modernisation
Obesity is associated with an increased rate of midlife deaths, particularly in cardio-vascular diseases (CVD) and diabetic diseases (DM). A goal of this trial was to establish whether the population of American Samoa showed the anticipated increase in morbidity associated with these two causes. Correspondingly, for all American-Samoan deaths (N = 1588) in the 1962-74 region, both raw and age-standardized ratios were computed, and DM and CVD inter-population compares were performed.
Secondly, the aim of this research was to establish whether increased death from exposure to cancer is related to the recent modernisation trends in the isles. To this end, 902 fatalities of individuals over 30 years of age were analysed to assess the variation in the death rate of cancer over the course of a period of time and the difference according to the level of enrolment in contemporary people.
CVD related death rates for Samoa were 82.1 per 100,000, versus 368.6 for the United States in 1962. Following the unification of old age the rate of Samoans rose to 242.5 and was still below that of the United States. Samoan DM-related death rates were 13.9 per 100,000, up from 15.9 in 1959.
Following old-age adjustment, the Samoan growth was 32.2 and 13.4 (1957-59), more than twice that of the United States. In Samoa, women's death from 196.2 in 1963-66 rose to 363.0 in 1971-74, while men's death rate was largely stable (417.3 and 429.0, respectively). Men who live in more modern areas of the island had 46.5% higher death from CVD compared to men in more conventional areas (343.5 and 234.5 respectively), but women had the highest death toll among those who live in more conventional areas (398.7).
Male serum VVD death rates were 50% higher than those for men in the "active" group.
