Phoenix Islands Protected Area is a largely unpopulated reef of corals situated in a region of global biological importance, the so-called Polynesian/Micronesian Hot Spot. All in all, it is the state-sized state of California in the USA, although the overall area is only 25km².

On Rawaki, the recreation of flora has made it possible for species such as Blaunoddies to find appropriate nesting grounds all over the isle. This restorative effort will allow phoenix raptors, white-throated petrels and other important seabirds to rest in the area. The second extermination mission was successfully completed in July 2011, with two other islands of the Pacific Pine Research Institute - Enderbury and Birnie.
The two islands had a population of the non-native Pacific rats. The Republic of Kiribati applied for the protected area of the Phoenix Islands to be inscribed on the United Nations World Heritage List (UNESCO) on 30 January 2009. The World Heritage Committee meeting in Brasília, Brazil, decided to add the World Heritage List to that.
