Merry (tax) public holiday? - Matheson' s Vineyard Times

Thouseholders licensed a change to an economical trend bill Tuesday that would create the week-end of August 11 and 12 as weekends duty-free purchases, according to the State House Intelligence Agency. "The sale taxes holiday is something for a week-end that is good for retailer, it is good for main street traders, it is good for consumer, it is good for ingredients, and it is great for the Massachusetts economy," State Rep Jeffrey Roy, D-Norfolk, who promoted the change, was rated as saying by the intelligence group.

This change requires that the 6.25 per cent VAT for the weekends be suspended for most articles costing less than $2,500. This exemption does not cover smoking, cannabis, gas, electric power, automobiles, yachts and food. This House approved the 124-18 amendments, according to the Intelligence Agency.

Representative Jay Kaufman, D-Middlesex and chair of the House Revenue Committee, rejected the change because of the "mythology" that fiscal days are generating sales and helping all merchants. Not only will the day postpone the timeout of consumers expenditures and hurt small companies that have to be paying to have extra workers working this week-end, he said.

Charlie Baker signs in late June an annual two-day pardon of the 6.25 per cent VAT from 2019, but not on the question of VAT holidays this summers. It must also approve a VAT exemption this past summers, and it must be initialled by the Gov. before the exemption comes into force.
