Maori's name Onewhero means "red earth", which means the ground color characteristic of the Franklin area. There is an English language chapel, a local language class, a football team ( "Rugby Club"),[3] a firehouse, a workshop, an Onewhero Society of Performance Art, a grass court team and a football team.

The Onewhero Golf Club is also near Pukekawa. One of the most important and only schools is the Onewhero Area Schule, which is open from the 1st to the 13th grade.
