Located in the Pacific Ocean just off Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) is made up of 14 islands. The major islands are Saipan (the capital), Rota and Tinian. CNMI has a total of 54,000 inhabitants. In the 1970' the Northern Mariana Islands chose not to become independent from the United States.
The Commonwealth in the Political Union with the United States, which grants American nationality to the inhabitants of the islands, was adopted by the US Congress in 1975 and entered into effect on 24 March 1976. The CNMI has a two-chamber legislation comprising an 18-member House of Representatives and a nine-member Senate.
According to the US Constitution, inhabitants of non-incorporated areas such as CNMI do not elect for the US President and Vice President. Northern Mariana Islands have a non-voting Congress representative, currently Gregorio Camacho Sablan, who was voted in 2008. Australia's relationship with CNMI is warm.
There is no representative in Australia in CNMI. Pohnpei Embassy is in charge of all CNMI activities in Australia. CNMI is home to some 20,000 international employees, mainly Filipinos and Chinese. In 2012, Australia's total goods export to CNMI amounted to $1.5 million (mainly heaters and refrigeration systems and components).
