Northernland Cycling Routes | North Island New Zealand

New Zealand's only major itinerary is the Twin Coast Discovery Highway. Completing a full New Zealand cruise starting and ending in Auckland is this Twin Coast Highway, a round trip specially developed for trips that include many of New Zealand's major tourist and leisure amenities.

It is almost not possible to avoid Northland without ever reaching this motorway, especially in the area between Kaipara Harbour and Bream Bay. This is an excellent way to travel both the eastern and western coastlines while exploring the sights and sounds of this northernmost part of New Zealand.

The Northland is quite big and needs a great deal of fun to drive. Twin Coast is a 900 km long tour that leads either up the east coast and down the west coast or inverse. Schedule your itinerary with enough free space to make every stop. As you go further north, there is less transport, but in the bigger cities there is more busy during the days and the peak holidays.

drivers rank and estimated travel time between the major settlements: The most important places and villages that the touristic itinerary crosses on or near the western or eastern coasts on its way north. Auckland to Cape Reinga, for example, is 444km long and takes about 8 hrs, that's a whole full one!

From Awanui and Kaitaia there are bus tours to Cape Reinga if you want to go as far north as possible. When you don't have enough to get to the northernmost point, you can select which places you want to visit and miss Cape Reinga.

I' m conscious that some maps/websites indicate different travel time, and some say it will take about 5.5 hrs to get to the top, but this is deceptive. Keep in mind that you do not know the streets, it will depend on the kind of car you drive and the wheather, the amount of transport rises during peak periods, you can be behind a truck or motor home, and you need to rest in comforts.
