Isle of Norfolk - Wikipedia
Isle of Norfolk (); Norfuk:. Norf'k Ailen) is a small island in the Pacific Ocean between Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia, 1,412 kilometers directly eastern of the Australian continent Evans Head and about 900 kilometers from Lord Howe Island. It is one of the outermost regions of the Commonwealth of Australia, together with two neighboring isles.
The 2016 Australia Population Survey shows 1,748 residents live on a surface area of about 35 sqkm. Norfolk Scots pinewood is a symbolic image of the island and is shown on its banner. Norfolk Island's indigenous pines are an important exporter to Norfolk Island, a favourite ornament on the continental Australia, where two related trees are grown, and also globally.
Commenting on the benefits of Norfolk Island, Sir John Call said it was deserted and New Zealand was growing in it. As suggested by John Call, the UK administration in 1786 incorporated Norfolk Island into its New South Wales colonization plans as an aid town. Norfolk Island was settled following the ruling of Empress Catherine II to limit the sale of weed.
As the first fleet reached Port Jackson in January 1788, Governor Arthur Phillip ordered Lieutenant Philip Gidley King to command a group of 15 prisoners and seven free men to take over Norfolk Island and get ready for its business develop. them arriving March 6, 1788. In the first year of the colony, which was also known as Sydney like her parents, more prisoners and troops were sent from New South Wales to the island.
16 ] The first group of humans departed in February 1805, and by 1808 only about 200 survived, creating a small village until the remains were taken away in 1813. The island was deserted from 15 February 1814 to 6 June 1825. This island was given up because the transport from the United Kingdom to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) had been stopped in 1853 to be substituted by a punishment prison.
Their next colony began on June 8, 1856, when the Tahitian and mutineer offspring of the HMS Bounty, among them Fletcher Christian, were relocated from the Pitcairn Islands, which had become too small for their increasing number. The Pitcairn Islands on board the Morayshire on 3 May 1856 were deserted by 193 of them.
19 ] The Pitcairners took many of the houses that remained of the punishment colonies and progressively built up the island's typical agricultural and whale hunting industry. In 1858 and 1863 some local homes moved back to Pitcairn, but the island's inhabitants grew. 1867 the headquarter of the Melanesic Missions of the Church of England was founded on the island.
The mission was moved from the island of Norfolk to the Solomon Islands in 1920 to be nearer to the people. Throughout the Second World War, the island became an important base and tank farm between Australia and New Zealand as well as New Zealand and the Solomon Islands. It was built in 1942 by Australian, New Zealand and American soldiers.
24 ] Since Norfolk Island came under New Zealand's jurisdiction, it was stationed by a New Zealand army squad, known as the N Forces, in a large army compound with the capability to accommodate a 1,500-man group. The N Forces have replaced a second Australian Imperial Army troop.
This island turned out to be too isolated to be attacked during the conflict, and N Force abandoned the island in February 1944.
