Norfolk Island ForecastForecast Norfolk Island
a?l?nd/; Norfuk: Norf'k Ailen) is a small island in the Pacific Ocean between Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia, 1,412 km just eastwards of the Australian continent of Evans Head and about 900 km from Lord Howe Island. It is part of the Commonwealth of Australia, but has a high level of self-government.
It is one of Australia's outermost regions, together with two neighboring isles. Norfolk Island, initially populated by Eastern Polynesians, was colonized by Great Britain in 1788 as part of its Australian population. Until May 1855, the island was used as a prison, with the exception of an 11-year break between 1814 and 1825, when it was closed down.
The island's civil domicile began in 1856 when it was populated from Pitcairn. The island became part of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901, which it has retained to this date. Norfolk Scots pinewood is a symbolic image of the island and is shown on its banner.
Pines indigenous to the island are an important exporter to Norfolk Island, a favourite ornament on the Australian continent, where two related trees are grown, and also in Europe.
