Harbors and marinas - Te Ara Encyclopedia of New Zealand
At the beginning of the 19th century, when the Europeans came to New Zealand, they needed secure harbors to moor their vessels. Their decision was to construct their colonies where it was secure for the vessels that brought humans and provisions. With more and more vessels arriving, it was necessary to manage the harbors in an orderly manner, and a system of port planks was established in 1870.
There were small harbors spread along the coastline, which served their own small municipalities. Those harbors became bigger cities, which became more and more rich with the construction of railways for the transport of goods from other places. A number of marinas were better than others - Dunedin, Wellington, Auckland and Lyttelton were well attended, while many smaller marinas were inoperative.
There are three principal kinds of marinas in New Zealand: Important ports: Wellington, Auckland and Lyttelton (in Christchurch service) were good harbors because they were protected and had deeper depth. Rriver ports: Many marinas, such as those in Greymouth, Westport and Wanganui, have been constructed in protected estuaries. Yet it was possible that streams were flat or sandbanks and vessels were often destroyed.
Wavebreaker ports: Some of them were hazardous because of the harsh sea. Timaru, ?amaru, Napier and New Plymouth have been secured by the construction of giant man-made harbors shielded by wavebreakers. Recently, the areas around New Zealand's harbors have been cleared and the waterfront promenade has become a place for walking, shopping or drinking.
