Difference between SDN, automation and orchestration

SDP is an interdependent group of technology that can describe the use of network controller softwares. The network devices have a network OS that controls how the devices operate internally. Every unit is uniquely configurated using long-term protocol such as SSH/terminal or SNMP. The latest legacies include standalone logs such as OSPF and SPANING TREE for automatic self-configuration based on rigorous designs in use.

The SDN assumes that the network operating system provides an API with which it can be configured by third party application programs. Use of these interfaces allows end-to-end service configurations across many network machines and moves the network shift from being connected to being a service. Most SDNs use a network adapter as a gateways to connect to the API of the SDNs.

Automating can be described as using automation technology to minimize the time and effort required for configuring, debugging and managing assets. Automated processes are often seen as Python or Perl scripting that executes a certain or tight subset of functionality. The result is more sophisticated automation instruments such as Ansible and Puppet.

O orchestration can be understood as the use of automation to deliver the service through the use of network controlling software. For example, orchestration is an appliance that can accept a client inquiry via a web gateway for new VMs that require deployment. It analyzes the network configurations and implements the changes to the client's configurations and then updates the accounting system.

It can be implemented in the network itself, in a hypervisor based hypervisor based network layer, over the WAN through an encoded channel or one of many other network routing possibilities. It is far less important than providing instrumented services across many machines and across many different workstations.
