Mlokai day trip to Kapukahehu
The Kapukahehu is a wonderful bay of sands on Molokai's south-western tip. Although neighbouring Papohaku is known as one of the longest whitest sands on Molokai, Kapukahehu is much more sheltered and provides the opportunity for swimming and snorkelling during the quiet saturday. Situated at the end of Pohakuloa Road, the lido has a small car park and a small path that leads through a coastline forest of ciawe into the south.
Outbreaks on both sides usually prevent hooded hoofs from strong northeastern Tradewind and make it the ideal place for a restful day on the sand or a pick nick. If the sea is quiet, you can chill out in the sheltered Kapukahehu Shelter. Like all the sand shores at the west end of Molokai, Kapukahehu is a great place to watch a breathtaking sundown.
Although its name Kapukahehu is from Hawaii, the name of the place is "Dixie Maru". Nowadays, this small bay is a favourite for those who travel with kids and those who just want to unwind. It is likely that you will have the sand for yourself, although a day with 15 persons would be overcrowded.
40 min from Kaunakakakai it is regarded as "far away" (at least for Molokai standards), so you should get your meals and drink before you leave for the beaches. You also want at least half a fuel cell before you leave Kaunakakakakai behind you, considering that the route is about 50 mile.
Route suggestions in Molokai | Frommer's
Molokai Isle is for those who try to get away from it all or who are looking for adventures. As there are no scheduled land based services to Molokai, you will have to travel to Honolulu and then take a shuttle to Molokai. Stop at Kapuaiwa Coconut Grove/Kiowea Park and observe the sundown.
As your watch is still adjusted to continental hours, you should have no problems getting up early for the Molokai Mule Ride. A 26 serpentine route on a 1,600-foot rock, this quest gives you the opportunity to explore the Kalaupapa Peninsula, where leper patients have been living for many years.
The Molokai has beautiful sandy areas - and on week days they are mostly empty! Murphy and Sandy Streets on East End and Kapukahehu (Dixie Maru) Streets on West End are ideal for snorkelling, according to season and bad weathers. A day on the shore and you are good for a walk into the Halawa Valley jungles.
After the walk, take a picknick and enjoy the remainder of the day on the Halawa beaches. Pull over to see the fish ponds before you exit the East End. Kayak, cycle or walk for a day. I would choose to kayak in the shallows of the East End.
As you have already seen the East End, you' ll be spending a day to explore the remainder of the isle. Begin a trip through the heart of Molokai by heading to Palaau State Park overlooking the Kalaupapa Peninsula, then stop at the Molokai Museum and Cultural Centre for a coffe stop at the Coffees of Hawaii Plantation Store and Espresso Bar.
We continue to the 3 miles long, sandy and whitewashed Papohaku Bay. Approximately one hours on the shore you will be taken to the chilly Maunaloa city to see the best shop on the island: the Big Wind Kite Factory & Plantation Gallery. When you have a moment, take a 20-minute stroll westwards to Kawaaloa Bay, the ideal place to say Molokai al-oha.
