The Moanalua Valley | The Foundation for Public Land

The Moanalua River Basin, one of the last truly open areas in the city of Honolulu, covering 3,716 hectares, barely avoided being destroyed as a possible highway for the H-3 motorway and was threatened by housing construction for two decade . Trusts for Public Land-and the State of Hawai'i Department of Lands and Natural Resources (DLNR) have joined forces to permanently acquire and preserve the area.

The Moanalua Valley contains five different woodlands and over nine mile brooks. It is an important wildlife and plant life site, such as the Elepaio woodland birds (a Hawaiian icon of canoeing), and is the site of the last sightings of the O'ahu Creeper, which is now considered deserted.

There are several important places of culture in the valley, among them a famous bohemian rock sculpted with exceptional petrol glyphs of the wing warrior. It is now administered by the State Department of Land and Natural Resources and is open to the general population for migrations, hunts, conservation of natural and agricultural resources and educational purposes.
