Marquesas Isles (; French: Iles Marquises or Archipelago of Marquises or Marquises; Marquesan: The volcanoes Te Henua (K)enana (North Marquesan) and Te Fenua `Enata (South Marquesan), both mean "The Land of Men") are a group of volcanoes in French Polynesia, an international community of France in the South Pacific.
Marquesas are at 9 degrees CRS, 139 degrees 30W. Highest point is the summit of Mount Oave (French: Mont Oave) on the Ua Pu Islands at 1,230 meters (4,035 ft) aboveseas.
One of the most secluded in the hemisphere, the group of Marquesas Islands is about 852 northeastern of Tahiti and about 3,000 nautical leagues from the western seaboard of Mexico, the closest continent's landmass.
One of the most secluded in the hemisphere, the group of Marquesas Islands is about 852 northeastern of Tahiti and about 3,000 nautical leagues from the western seaboard of Mexico, the closest continent's landmass. The Marquesas, with a total area of 405 square metres, are one of the biggest groups of islands in Polynesia, initially explored by galleon navies on their way to Manila.
After Tahiti, Nuku Hiva is the second biggest isle in the whole area. Except Motu One, all the Marquesas islets are of vulcanic origins. Contrary to the general idea of luxuriant exotic flora, the Marquesas are remarkable arid isles. For this reason, the archipelago is frequently exposed to droughts, and only those that are highest in the sky (usually over 750 m above sealevel ) have good rainfall.
It is believed that the Marquesas Islands were built from a centre of the ascending mage, the Marquesas-Hotpot.
