Makahiki is the old Hawaii New Year in honour of the Lono deity of the Fawaiian faith. Makahiki was held in three stages. Hawaiians had no cash or other means of barter. They have been sold on the Lono sanctuaries in Heiau - churches - in every area of the isle.
During the third stage, the www. lono.com - steering boat - was laden with ho?okupu and taken to the seas, where it was offered as a present to Lono. At the end of the Macahiki Fest, the chieftain left the bank in a jet. The name Lono i na macahiki was sometimes given to a regal delivery during the year.
During the Makahiki seasons of 1778, Captain Cook landed at Kealakekua Bay, near a large hot spring at Lono. Makahiki's beginning is usually determined by astronomic observation every year. In Hawaii, when the Makali'i (Pleiades) stellar mound opens just after sundown, usually on 17 November, the rise of the following first half-cubic is the beginning of the summer time.
