ahana is a New Zealand play by Lee Tamahori inspired by the novel Bulibasha: The Gypsies by Witi Ihimaera. The Patriarch was published outside New Zealand. The Mahana narrates the tale of two Maori familys, the Mahanas and the Poatas, who are bitterness-frivals.

Allegedly, the family's competition goes back to Tamihana Mahana (Temuera Morrison), who falls in love with Ramona (Nancy Brunning) and snatched her from her fiancée Rupeni Poata (Jim Moriarty). At the end of the 1950', Tamihana Mahana is the Mahana clan's father and heads a flourishing sheepshearing company in the Gisborne District.

Stubborn Simeon Mahana (Akuhata Keefe) scrubs under his grandfather's auteur. Tamihana Simeon allocates homework as a penalty for derogatory comments during the family's evening prayers. Simeon finds a picture of Ramona Mahana and Rupeni Poata as a pair while brushing his grandmother's workroom. Later Simeon shows the picture of his mom Huria Mahana (Maria Walker) and his aunties.

He is dissatisfied with her boy because he has delved into the story of the whole familiy and says that his grandma does not like Rupeni. Later Simeon asks his grandma, who hesitates to speak about the issue, but notices that "men are fighting for what they want". On the next morning Tamihana commissions his grandchild Simeon to transport a killed lamb to his home at a remote shear site.

Along the way Simeon sees Ramona's deserted farm. Simeon finds out at the cutting ward that the Mahana shavers have enough stock of meats and that his grandpa has sent him on a fierce wrong path. As Simeon lives out his resentments towards his grandpa, his mom tells him that Tamihana is the wellspring of her doings.

Simeon and the other Mahana grandkids are later allowed to see the 3:10 to Yuma in the city's theater. Poata teenager Caesar Poata (Te Kohe Tuhaka) interrupts the show by horseback rides through the theater. In the midst of the mess, Simeon uses the chance to give Poppy Poata (Yvonne Porter) a good kisses.

Later Simeon and his classmates visit the court during a visit to schools. Caesar Poata is one of the accused and is convicted of criminals' filth. Simeon gives a touching talk when his instructor asks him to turn to the magistrate on the name of his classmate, in which he criticizes Caesar's hard handling and the prohibition of the use of the English word.

After the journey Simeon is commended for his bravery by his instructor Mr. McKenzie (Fraser Brown) and Rupeni Poata. A discontented Tamihana, back at the Mahana house, tries to cut Simeon's hair. Simeon' s dad Joshua Mahana (Regan Taylor) hurries to defend his kid and beats his dad.

She bequeathes her home and country to her boy Joshua and his wife. He and his wife and daughter are working on the restoration of the ruined building. She is also visiting the Simeon people, to give them a little bit of ethical help.

Simeon' s mistress Miriam Mahana (Ngahuia Piripi) and her mistress Pani (Eds Eramiha) join Simeon' s Simeon' s household later. Simon looks for help from Rupeni Poata, who equips Joshua with a Thomas rail. Simeon' s wife and daughter are fighting for their survival, and he succeeds in getting a shaving agreement with the landowner Mr. Collins.

Simeon persuades his father Joshua to register his father as "Mahanas 2" for the Golden Shears Game. Mahanas 2" fight their relatives and the Poatas. After a tough contest the "Mahanas 2" won the Golden Scissors and a price of NZ£ 250.

Ramona never loves his grandpa Tamihana because he rapes her and steals from Rupeni. As Tamihana, the father of the Mahana tribe, dies of colorectal cancers, the Mahana tribe gathers in the court of the Shrine. Tamihana hands his grandchild a note on her death bed. At Tamihana's burial, the Poata Clans appear under the direction of Rupeni.

Simeon explains the content of Tamihana's epistle to everyone before a battle can begin. Tamihana has made an arrangement with Ramona that she can go back to her beloved Rupeni after his sickness. Ramona talks for her grandchild after some discussions and admits that she never did love Tamihana.

As Ramona goes with Rupeni, the Mahanas and Poatas make up. Ruiapeni commends Simeon for having brought tranquillity to her two family. Simeon' s going out with Poppy Poata.
