Fiji's Lomaiviti Island is made up of seven major archipelagos and a number of smaller islets. In May 1789, the first known sightings of the Lomaiviti group in Europe were made by Captain William Bligh, who was in a life boat on his epochal journey to Timor after being abandoned by his team in the mutiny on the Bounty.

In 1867 the United States Navy confiscated the Koro, Batiki and Gau Isles as collateral for a longstanding liability to the US Consulate John Brown Williams of Seru Epenisa Cakobau, the Vunivalu (Paramount Chief) of Bau Island, who alleged to be King of Fiji. That guilt was one of the reasons for Cakobau's choice to hand over Fiji to the United Kingdom in 1874, just three years after he realized his decades-long vision of unifying the countless Fiji Isles and Tribal peoples under his leadership.

The Lomaiviti region consists of one of the fourteen Fiji counties, the province of Lomaiviti. Among the well-known locals of Lomaiviti are Simione Kaitani, a former minister (2001-2006) in the administration of Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase and, since June 2006, the head of the affairs of state in the House of Representatives.

The former Deputy Prime Minister Taufa Vakatale and the well-known Minister of the Interior Josefa Vosanibola are also from Lomaiviti.

Situated in the center of an extinguished volcano craters, this small town is rich in flora and fauna and is also home to the Lovoni people. Lovoni has a proud past and is characterized by its sights such as the tomb of the chieftains and the Korolevu Hill fortress.

Meeting the chieftain of the town ( "Sevusevu" or gift), plunge into the Fiji story and savour a meal with Fiji local cuisine and drinks. Situated on a secluded and unspoilt reef, lush turquoise waters and beautiful rocks, visitors can pamper themselves in their own unspoilt South Pacific spot and feel the best of the world.

It could be the most beautiful city in the whole wide open sea and it is a fact that you can see many of the amazing marine life during the sun. However, to appreciate the Lomaiviti Ggroup's natural beauties, you must try snorkeling at noon. The Koro is a vulcanic volcano in the Lomaiviti Islands, with its own runway.

Tortoises have long been recognized as holy god ancestors to the peoples of the village of Nacamaki in Koro, and this is now one of the few places in Fiji where the visitor can participate in the particular tortoise callitual. To the south-west of Ovalau lies a luxuriant, undulating Moturiki Islands, populated by 2000 Fijians in 10 towns.

While there is no lodging for travelers, a full excursion to Motoriki via Leleuvia Iceland Resort is a rewarding experience, especially for lovers of local historical sights. Significant archeological finds have been made on this isle, among them the oldest Lapita site and the oldest man-made frame found in Fiji, which is about 3000 years old.

Situated on a first-class property next to the City Hall and the ruins of the Masonic Lodge, the Ovalau is the oldest of its kind in the South Pacific. Nadi - If you travel to Koro Island in the Lomaiviti Group, Fiji Link provides air lines with internal services from Nadi.

To get to the other Lomaiviti isles, the simplest way is via Fiji's capitol Suva. There are several ways to get to Suva after arriving in Nadi, among them shuttle services from the airports, taxi services and public coaches. The Fiji Link is the national airline of Fiji and offers low-cost internal connections to 12 thrilling cities, among them Suva.

Fiji Shuttle operates a 24-hour shuttle between Nadi International and Suva International Airports. Transfers to and from the airports begin at FJ$ 228 for one way and FJ$ 410 for both ways. The yellow taxis are the offical taxis of the airports and are located in front of the arrival area. From Nadi International Airports the cost is FJ $5 and a trip to Suva costs about FJ $200.

Buses run outside the Airport International Arrivals to Nadi - just tick one. If you are travelling over the shore (Viti Levu), select either Pacific Transport or Sunbeam Fiji, each providing about a couple hundred excursions per days, with regular timetables to Suva and along the coastline.

Coming from Suva - When you arrive in Suva, you will reach Levuka in Ovalau, the Lomaiviti group's principal isle. You can fly to Bureta Airport in Levuka from Suva at Nausori Airport via Fiji Link. A longer but more pleasant and visible alternative is to take the Suva to Levuka shuttle service operated by Patterson Brothers Shipping Company.

From Suva at 13:30 every day, arrives in Levuka around 18:00 (except Sundays). Levuka, Ovalau Island - Upon your arrivals at Bureta International Bureta there are several ways to get to and from Levuka Town, among them shuttle services from the airports, taxi services, public transport and speed boat transfer.

If you are looking for a cheap means of transportation, there is a shuttleservice from the runway to Levuka. At Levuka Airport you can take a 30 minute cab trip around the archipelago to Levuka. There' s a street that goes around Øvalau and there is a public transportation from Øvalau to Levuka every day.

In order to reach the other Lomaiviti Island, you can organize speed boat transfer. As most non-Viti Levu the Lomaiviti Group has few shops, especially outside Levuka, and the shops they have are much more costly.
