Living on Molokai Island
Life on Molokai IslandWhat is the right island in Hawaii for me?
There are six different Hawaiian Isles accessible to visitors, the four most important being Oahu, the Big Island, Kauai and Maui. Other smaller - but also remarkable - islets include Lanai and Molokai. Choosing the island may be difficult, but each island has something unique for each kind of holiday you want to start.
Maui is the second biggest of the islands of Hawaii and probably one of the most romantically, Maui is home to some of the best shores in the game. It is an internationally renowned favourite, with enchanting historical towns, wonderful sandy shores near shining lush verdant dales and critical regarded dining and resort locations such as Westin Maui Resort & Spa, Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa, Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort, Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua and Grand Wailea - A Waldorf Astoria Resort.
Kahului Airport (OGG) has scheduled services from many major continental destinations, with more arrivals every year. United and Hawaiian air travel from San Francisco has been added to Virgin America this past season, reducing the costs of traveling from the West Coast with United and Hawaiian air travel. To get to the famous Ka'anapali Beach in Maui, visit the Westin Maui Resort & Spa.
" Oahu has a great deal to boast, from upmarket shops and dining to sandy beach and spacious resort facilities outside the commotion. Oahu has a characteristic mix of island and US traditions. It is the ideal island for those who enjoy the luxury of having a metropolis at hand.
Travellers often depart from the Honolulu, President Obama's home town and home of Pearl Harbor. Oahu is often the beginning of an island hoping holiday - or a long week-end excursion from the west coast. With so many Waikiki and calmer North Shore and Windward Coast properties, there's something for everyone, from cheap travellers to high rollers.
There are many large carriers flying to Honolulu International Airport (HNL). The Modern Honolulu is the number two on TripAdvisor and at the top of the celebrity roster for those who want to see and be seen. Hawaii's biggest island (hence the name) offers eight eco-systems - from a arid volcano scenery that reminds of Mars to luxuriant rainforests.
Travellers can enjoy a walk on the Kohala Coast beaches - with an annual mean of 355 sunny nights - or hike in Kilauea, one of the world's most vibrant volcanos. There' s an endless range of activities on Big Island; discover the rainforest, drop off at one of the many greens or take a trip through Kona Brewing Co.
The Big Island has two major multinational airports: KOA in the western part and Hilo ITO in the eastern part. Because of the restricted number of departures directly from the continent, most travellers take a 40-minute plane to Honolulu and then a 40-minute trip to Kona or Hilo. Situated on one of the best shores on Big Island, the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel boasts an open-air patio lounge before check-in to the "biggest rooms on the Kohala coast" (Frommer's), all with sea views balcony.
Sheraton Kona Resort & Spa in Keauhou Bay, a popular meeting place for members, lies on top of pristine rocky lavas and offers unrivalled vistas of Hawaii's famous sundowns. Kauai, also known as Garden Island, is known for its stunning scenery, which ranges from mountain and ocean crags to sand and reef.
When one of them arouses your interest, Kauai is the place you want to be. You can also see the stunning Waimea Canyon on your way to the scenic Na Pali coast, home to lonely sandy shores and waterfalls: many tourists take a plane to Honolulu and jump to Kauai, which takes just 40 minutes by plane.
A number of West Coast carriers arrive at Kauai's Lihue Airport but are expecting to charge more for air travel. The Sheraton Kauai is the only seaside resorts in the area and rats will want to do so. The Westin Princeville Oceans Sea Villas cliffs provide a wide view of the sea, which often contains breaking whale sheets during the hiking seasons for a more intimate sojourn.
Considered Hawaii's most tempting island, the secluded Lanai provides a down-to-earth - and costly - fare. The island has only two resort sites, both Four Seasons real estate, with a 21 hectare Lanai City property with views of the landscape and the other seating areas from the beaches along a conservation area.
There is no US based air travel agency, so most travellers travel to Honolulu or Maui and are connected to land based carriers flying to Lanai Airport (LNY). Over half of the Molokai people have an Indian legacy, making the island one of Hawaii's most traditional places.
"The Molokai is still a period pod at the beginning of the twenty-first century," says Frommer's of the island without extensive, well-known resort. On the Molokai there are no stoplights where daily routine is relaxing and unwinding. The Molokai is the place to take a rest and enjoy old Hawaii without any splendour: there are two ways to reach Molokai: by airplane and by boat.
There are many people flying to Honolulu or Maui, where you can take flights with regional carriers to Hoolehua Molokai Airport (MKK), which takes only 30 minutes. If you want to take the boat, you have to go to Maui. It takes about two hour by boat from Maui.
