The atolls of the world

There' s only one list of the atolls of the earth that has been made public (Bryan, 1953) and it is the origin of the often cited number that there are 425 or "more than 400" of them. The initial compendium, however, contained many shores and other lagoon-free coral canals. Furthermore, 171 of the above mentioned coral corals (39%) are mainly sub-tidal atolls with little or no reefs.

There are 104 of them locked and have no connection between the laguna and the sea. Locations and types of atolls (atoll reefs and atolls that are open, enclosed or enclosed with modified salt content of lagoons/oxygen) are shown on charts and charts attached to this work, and a photographical listing of all but two of 439 atolls has been compiled as a complement.

The list is by no means exhaustive. Many atolls or atoll-like structure have no satellites or appropriate descriptions on maps or in text.
