Largest National Monument
Biggest national monumentA trump card to allow longline fishing in Hawai'i's Papah?naumoku?kea Marine National Monument.
Where is the largest national monument in the USA?
Twice the Texas population. It is bigger than all US national parks together and covers 582,578 sq. mile area. Hawaiian' s Papah?naumoku?kea Marine National Monument is a dual dosage of world wealth: a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was awarded in 2010 for its inherent and culturally significant nature.
This is the first UNESCO World Heritage site in the United States. For over a hundred years, the effort to conserve the nature and culture of the isolated area north-west of Hawaii has been growing steadily. During the early 1900s, conservational President Theodore Roosevelt sent the Marines to Midway Atoll to stop the mass slaughtering of sea birds for feather and egg.
The national and state agencies, among them several governors since Roosevelt, have strengthened and enlarged the monument and its protection. By 2016, the formal reserves had increased fourfold to their current all-time high when the boundary was extended to encompass the sole industrial area around the maritime monument.
It is a maritime monument that covers both terrestrial and maritime areas. 7, 000 different types of seas are found at Papah?naumoku?kea, a fourth of them only in this area. Expansive stretches of reef - known by expert circles as "rainforests of the sea" - as well as island, deep seas and shallows are essential - and now that fisheries are prohibited - under shelter.
It is a protected area for endangered and endangered wildlife such as bluewhales, leafy tortoises, Hwaiian black seal, 14 million birds that represent 22 different bird populations, among them Laysan Finch, Laysan duck and Laysan album rosse, Pritchardia palm trees and crayfish. Subsequent culturally significant events now commemorated in Papah?naumoku?kea are the historic Battle of Midway in World War II and its former status in merchant whale hunting in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
There is only very little accessibility for the general population to the remote and confined maritime monument. Any ship must notify entry and exit of the monument. The Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge and Battle of Midway National Memorial can only be visited with the permission of the staff.
