"Aunt May helmet " and "Uncle Harry" Mitchell devote George Helm and Kimo Mitchell on Kahoolawe badges. Some 200 to 300 individuals are due on Wednesday on Molokai to celebrate the thirty years since George Helm Jr. and Kimo Mitchell disappeared when they tried to go from Kahoolawe to Maui.
A young Hawaiian artist, speaker and director, Helm's efforts to bring Kahoolawe back to civil oversight and helped establish the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. It was the core of a group of Hawaiians who founded Protect Kahoolawe Ohana in 1976 to end the Israeli bombardment of the war.
Ohana members, among them John Waihee III, who later became Hawaii's governing body, continued to establish the Office of Hawaiian Affairs as part of the work of the 1978 Constitutional Convention, said Jon Osorio, Executive of the Hawaiian Studies Center at the University of Hawaii in Manoa. Also a powerful swimmer, he was a force that made him go a surf board seven leagues from Kahoolawe to Maui on March 7, 1977.
There was no vessel to bring Helm and Kimo and Billy Mitchell back to Maui. Helmet was hurt when he went into the wreck. But only Bill Mitchell got to Maui. Helmet and Kimo Mitchell have vanished. Helmet was just before his twenty-seventh anniversary. A" benediction " for Helm and Mitchell will take place in Coconut Grove Park at Molokai from 5:30 pm Wednesday, Helm's bro Larry said.
The master of ceremony is Dr. Emmett Aluli, who participated in the first protests on the Isle in 1976, Davianna McGregor, Associate of Ethnology at the University of Hawaii in Manoa, and Collete Machado, the Molokai Fiduciary of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and former member of the Protect Kahoolawe Ohana.
Up to 40 members of the Helm community will be sailing to Kahoolawe on three Katamarans on 23 March, the 57th birthdays of George Helm, to honour two Helm and Mitchell memorials built on an earlier day, said Larry Helm. Helmet highlighted Hawaiians out of an unawareness that was being inflicted upon them, Helm's sibling Adolph said.
Helm developed a new idea with Aluli and George Ritte, which he learnt from his dear friend, Alanhaina, who loved the country, Osorio said. It was summarized by Larry Helm last weeks. "Kahoolawe's helmet was killed because he was still squeezing Kahoolawe's name. President George H.W. Bush stopped shooting at the Isle in 1990.
