Kauai Hawaii Pronunciation

I' m relieved to see that my debate is in order.

Kauai pronunciation

Two weeks ago on a ferry we bumped into someone who said "Kauai" like Hawaii, except with a K. Is that it? It may well be good, since she has been living there for some length of while ( (an Australian girl named Nila with her former 40+ year old US spouse, and an airline pilot discharged by The Gipper), but I appreciate I've never even had the chance to hear the name before.
