Kauai, Hawaii, with small children
On Kauai, activities can be adapted to the adventurers height. When I first came to the Isle before parental leave and with a boyfriend, we wandered deeply into an abandoned rockyon and along a vicious cliff trail, collected livestock on horses on an extensive farm and found hidden shores where we were playing in the great break.
On this occasion we walked with my man and our 1 and 3 year old ones in the drag line soft paths along the ravine and walked along the beach, where we could catch a dragon. I was playing a cow girl and my daugther saw her first equine at the farm, and we found beautiful sandy areas protected from the great reef.
As our plane arrived at 9pm in Lihue, the capitol of the isle, we began our adventures in Poipu on the southern bank. The one-room apartment in Castle Kiahuna Plantation was one hours away from the beach and near some of the best ones on the isle.
Afterwards we tasted papayas, lemon-coconut stock and got to know traditional Indonesian condiments while we listened to Hwaiian songs. Spending a full night at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa, which has a water body that connects chlorine-free swimming pool (cleaned with ozone) and is located near a salt water lagoon with an artificial sand dunes and genuine palms.
Swam around the swimming pool under palm trees, zip down the 150 foot long waterslide and have a look at Camp Hyatt Kauai, which provides 24-hour session for all 3-12 potters. We exchanged our full-size Dodge Grand Caravan, a much-needed upgrading to better fit our prams, bags and equipment, before we drove westwards to Waimea.
From Kauai Babytor Rentals we hired a babytor for the whole month, which turned out to be priceless in a cabin where we had to keep inquisitive little folks out of their ensuites. Kauai Babies Rentals offers everything from saucers to cribs, rucksacks, strollers to swings.
Half way to Waimea we made a short stop at Brick Oven in Kalaheo, a favourite food for families, serving pizzas, pastas, salads and desserts on Monday and Thursday evening. In Waimea Plantation Cottages, our centuries-old two-bedroom house overlooking the sea and a grass area that turned out to be ideal for barefooted hang-gliding or kicks around a sandal.
In Waimea one morning we had a tasty takeaway from Wrangler's steak house, known as the Chew Bite Canned Luncheon, with prawns and vegetable tempura, stewed brown and stewed rices and stewed meat terrayaki in a three-level can. Then, we passed the 89 degree gooey temperature and went 3,500 ft up to Kokee State Park, where it was refreshingly cool.
Visit the Kokee Museum Visitor and Activity Centre to see a small exhibition on birds, animals and plants, its geology and the paths open to them. One of my volunteers suggested the Pihea Trail at the end of the Kokee Road, just behind the Kalalau Overlook, and it proved to be my favourite among the many walks I've done in this area.
It was a dirty path, chunky and reddish in colour, following a crest with a view of the Alakai Swamp on the right and a wide view of the Kalalau Valley with its luxuriant, ribbed rocks on the lefthand side - the best flavour of the Na Pali coastline you can get without the Kalalau trails themselves or jumping in a chopper or canoe.
Pihea was between 10 and 40 ft but without railings or railings or railings and sharp falls on both sides, we put the child in a rucksack straps and our child firmly under control (prams cannot manoeuvre the rough, rugged path). It goes down a quart and then rises smoothly for three quintals to a vantage point.
Don't exit the area without a stop at Waimea Avenue Lookout in nearby Waimea Avenue. Take the pram-friendly walk to a viewing deck overlooking the vast Grand River Grand Rock Cayon, which Mark Twain understands as the Grand River of the Pacific. The Kamalani Playground in Lydgate Park just outside Kapaa on the eastern shore was a great success with our newcomer.
As the children needed a rest, we headed a few kilometres to Coconut Coasters in Kapaa, where we hired our own motorcycles and a double-bike trailers with a cuddly cushioned inlay. From there we went 3.5 leagues northerly of the city on a multi-purpose cobbled path along the coastline, Ke Ala Hele Makalae.
We passed some of the most famous and beautiful sandy spots and many" comforts", which are roofed picknick places, and then over an increased path out of the city, which offered us a wonderful view. Weekday programs during the holidays include horseback riding, a pets' enclosure, walks in the "wild boar forest", gathering bugs, activities such as hop scotch with figures from Hawaii and the opportunity to get to know a horse.
Plan a trip through the Botanical Garden Na Aina Kai and the Sculpture Park, a luxuriant marvel. We' ve been spending our last few nights observing the sunset at Kee Beach at the northwest point of the archipelago, walking through woods to picturesque places like Secret Beach near Kilauea and play in the shallows of Hanalei Bay. ib.us.
