Kuthuparamba - Nedumpoyil has many fractured roads. Updated (18 - Sep- 09): Two week ago I went alone from Mayyil to Mumbai in my scorpion. My itinerary has been Mayyil-PavannoorMotta-Irikkoor-Iritti-Kottiyoor-boystown-Manathwaadi-Batheri-Gundulpet-Mysore-Bangalore..... At 7.30 I entered the race in 3-3 and entered the town. It was a good road.
Normally I drive from Bangalore to Kuttiady (a small city in Calicut near the Kannur County boundary ) via NH 212 i. e. Mysore - Gudulpet - Mysore - Gudulpet - Gultan Matheri - Kalpetta all the way (I take a detour through Tharuvana and descend over the Kuttiady Pass): The route is exactly 360 km from Bangalore - Kuttiady.
It is not a good road (with so many potholes and a great deal of traffic) from Mysore to Nanjangud - I estimate about 17-20 km, and then a few stretches from Kalpetta to Kuttiady mainly because of the tsun. However, the Bangalore - Hunsur - Nagerhole - Manathavadi - Kuttiady road looks much shorter (about 300 km) - not sure what the road is like.
From Bangalore I traveled to Koothuparamba via Mysore - Gundlupet - SultanBattery - Panamaram - Mananthavady - Periya - Nedumpoyil - Koothuparamba. It was in better condition than my last trip in October 2008. Update(Aug 2008): From Manathavadi via Nedupoyil the road to Kannur is very poor.
Don't take this road. We' ve been informed that if you want a good road, take NH17 i.e. Kannur to Calicut(Kozhikode) . Redirection is a small road and can take 1 hour. Take Calicut (Kozhikode) to Bangalore (NH212,SH17). There' s a section of Kozicode (Calicut) to Lakkidi.
The 9 hairpin turns are not hard, but because the road is broken in the turns, it can be hard on wet days. When you are looking for Northern India cuisine while returning to Kozhikode, there is a Kozhikode IIM Frost Dining House. The overall length from Kannur to Kozhikode (Bangalore via Calicut) is about 445 km.
Remainder of the road to Gundelpet-Mysore-Banagalore is good. Watch out for the cruise counters that run without signs all the way from Gundelpet to Bangalore. Updated (Aug 2008): on the HD Kote - Kattikulam road, which should be finished in April 2008...The road is unspoiled and as poor as here noted.....
Took 2 hrs to cross this road.... Very avoided road! On our return the Tholpetty - Hunsur-Srirangapatnam... path was really peace. Return from Kannur to Bangalore: Mananthavadi - Kartikulam - Tholpetty - Kutta - Kanur - Ponnampet - Gonikuppa - Hunsur - Mysore - Bangalore.
30 in the morning and arriving non-stop in Bangalore at 18:00 - a whole of 7.5 h. It is much better and would probably have taken only about 6 and 15 to Bangalore from Kannur at 5.30 am. In any case, this path is highly recommendable until the Kabini road is mended.
Update(June 2008): Streets are frantic and only the public traffic dares to go this way. I don't know why they took that itinerary. Updated (April 2008): Itinerary No. 3 is in good shape except for 3 - 4 km near Kutta, but we could also do it in a Maruti 800.
Please be aware that Nagarhole Road is only open from 6.00 am to 6.00 pm. It has a longer optional (2), the whole distance is 400 km (from Kengeri, Bangalore), but the road is excellent (as of August 2006). It' much better than the Gonikoppal itinerary. Update (February 2008): Updated (January 2008): From Virajpet to Kannur by coach.
Apart from a few roaming lorries and a few Karnataka transport busses, NOONE drives on this road. Kerala Transport busses have not been on this road for a long time. Pot holes as low as 2 ft - just rock and debris in most places - not even the appearance of a road.
DON'T take this road. The Bangalore Alakode / Cherupuzha / Karuvanchal Itinerary. Streets are clear from the last trip on, although the distance is 30-40 km higher than the major road through Makuta (Kerala / Karnataka frontier post). Bangalore Mysore-Gundlupet(turn right onto Ooty Road towards Calicut)-Sultan Battery-Mananthavady-Boys Town-Irrity-Sreekandapuram-Naduvil-Karuvanchal-Alakode.
On the way from Bangalore to Kannur: Mysore - HD Kote - Kabini - Bavali - Manathavadi, Kootuparamba - Kannur. After 356 km, departure at 5.30 a.m. and non-stop to Kannur at 1 p.m. - 7.5 h. in all. This 30 km long track within the Kabini-Wald is VERY poor and took a full 2 h.
We do not recommend this itinerary. REMARK: You are building a new road in Kabini, which should be completed by April 2008. If you come after April 2008, you should inquire and when the new road is finished, you should definitely come on this road, otherwise you will be asked to reroute from Kattikkulam towards Tholpatty-Kutta-Nagarhole-Hunsur.
