Island with no Electricity

The whole island is without electricity again.

Energy had been recovered to more than three fourths of Puerto Ricans Thursday mornings after a massive electrical failure had powered the whole island on Wednesday. Puerto Rico Electric Energy Authority said 1.1 million of its 1.47 million clients will have electricity again by 7am on Thursday: This is the second failure to hit the whole island in the six-month period since Hurricane Maria, and it once again eroded the island's delicate reconstruction process after the devastating wind.

Wednesday's failure was due to a dozer that hit a line while trying to clear a crumbled transmitter mast, El Nuevo Día said. It is an important throttling point for the Puerto Rico electricity network, which transports electricity from the generator sets in the southern part of the island to the cargo centres in the northern part.

Cobra Energy sub-contractor D. Grimm won a $200 million order to help Puerto Rico's destroyed electricity network overhaul. While Cobra was chosen with Whitefish Energy Services after the storm, the business was reviewed by Congress because the firms had so little network maintenance to do.

Electricity went out less than a weeks after a fallen boom on an important electrical line cut off 840,000 electricity. There are still 61,000 utilities that have been without electricity since September, the US Department of Energy said early this months. Since" customer" usually relates to a house that can include several persons, it is estimated that more than 100,000 persons have not had electricity since the hurricane.

The 3.3 million inhabitants of Puerto Rico have been subjected to a torturously sluggish energy recovery since the hurricane and suffer from damage to human health and the environment, as red tape, logistic problems and possible corrupt practices hinder their advancement.
