Travel to different islands in Hawaii

Visiting the hawaiian archipelago offers a variety of options, from the drama of the Kilauea Volcano on the Great Island to the rolling banks of Waikiki on Oahu and the astonishing road to Hana on Maui. Travel between them needs a small approach to maximise your paradise.

Hawaii's only large merchant carrier will remain Hawaiian Airlines, offering connections to all the main land and sea ports as well as Samoa, Australia and more. Mokulele Airlines and Pacific Wings offer small airlines flying puddles between the isles. There' only two ferryboats between the Hawaiian isles. Molokai ferry runs twice a day from Lahaina, Maui, to the near-by Molokai ferry port and lasts about 90 mins.

Maui Lanai Expeditions ferry runs five daily from Lahaina to Manele Bay on Lanai in 45 mins. The majority of inter-island services go through Honolulu International Airport on Oahu, although there are occasional non-stop services from Big Isles to Maui. When you fly from Big Iceland to Kauai, you probably make a short stop on Oahu before you catch the connection one.

Big Island has two airfields, one on the Kona side and one on the Hilo side. Maui is the main airport for air travel to Kahului Airport, which is close to the central Kihei area. There are airfields on all neighbouring isles, with Lanai, Molokai and Kauai included. From Honolulu International Airport, all destinations can be easily accessed by airplane in 30 to 40 mins.

There are eight large Hawaiian islands: Oahu, Hawaii, Maui, Lanai, Molokai, Kauai, Kahoolawe and Niihau. Big Iceland, the biggest isle of the necklace, lies at the most southern end of the state, while Kauai is at the north-western end of the state. Maui county comprises the Molokai, Lanai and Maui islets.

When you plan to see more than one isle, bear in mind that the journey between the isles can take at least half the daily itinerary. Rather than trying to see as many islets as possible, you should explore an islet thoroughly, such as the Big Isles, which are as big as all the other islets put together.

Or, in Waikiki, for a few nights of beach and shops, then for the rest of the journey, go to another destination, such as Kauai. The Hawaii Books Publishers Association awarded The Hawaii Home Publishers Award of Excellence to The Hawaii Homeook, which was number 1 on the Hawaii bestseller lists.
