Easter Island in New Zealand Vaka

Nearly 90 workdays after their start in New Zealand, two Vaka - Te Aurere and Ngahiraka Mai Tawhiti - have made it to Rapanui, Easter Island. Twenty members of the ship's personnel only wanted to recreate the journeys of the early Polynesians in double-hull-cans using conventional navigational method.

Tawhiti's head-navigator Jack Thatcher says the long voyage and grueling crews took their toll, many of whom had little sailin' previous sailin' experiences before they started to train for the show. Mr Thatcher says that the first stage across the Southern Ocean took 42 journeys and was sometimes frightening because of the great oceans and the strong wind, which took up to three whole-day.

Occupations were thrilled when the island was discovered. Cabaret workers Hector Busby and Vanau will be celebrating their performance when they leave New Zealand on Tuesday.
