Hiva Oa is the second biggest of the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia, an oceanic area of France in the Pacific Ocean, covering 320 sqkm. Situated on 9 45' southerly breadth and 139 watts long, it is the biggest isle of the group.
About 2,200 persons live on the isle. Temetiu is the highest point of Hiva Oa at 1,200 meters (3,937 feet). In accordance with the indigenous religions, the deities established the Marquesas as their home. That is why all islands have a name associated with the construction of a home - Hiva Oa means long ridge beam.
