The Mauna Kea is with 13.796 ft the highest peak of Hawaii and the whole Pacific area. It is the highest in the whole wide open sea, 16,000ft. Because of its high density, it has also burrowed into the scab.

Bordering Mauna Kea, the Mauna Loa cones are only 35 metres lower. The Mauna Kea covers 23% of the Isle of Hawaii and is the 4th most prolific of the volcanoes. Some of the oldest known cliffs are perhaps 237,000 years old and the approximate lifespan of Mauna Kea is 1 million years.

The Mauna Kea is currently inactive and its last explosion occurred about 4500 years ago. Mauna Kea is sometimes subject to seismic events due to tectonics rather than magmatic movements. Wintry snows fall to the tops and accumulate at many foot, which has given the summit its native name Mauna Kea, which means "White Mountain".

In the last 100,000 years there have been an estimation of three glaciations on Mauna Kea. Mauna Kea has exercised a strong mental attraction since people arrived in the Hawaiian Islands and often hikers have made the long ascent to its sheer cliffs. Halekala is the name of the craters that form the top of the East Maui volcano.

One of the younger islands in the Hawaiian range, Maui began as two distinct volcanos on the seabed (the East Maui probably began about 2. 0 million years ago.) The two volcanos repeatedly burst out over great geological eras and expanded new fields of volcanic rock on the older, incremental volcanic tops until they eventually appeared above the seabed.

Today, Haleakala, the bigger east oriental vulcano, has an altitude of 10,023 ft (3055 meters) above the oceans and about 30,000 ft (9,100 meters) from its seabed basis (97% of the total of Haleakala is actually below seavel.). The Haleakala is often and erroneously referred to as the biggest sleeping caldera in the worid, but there are bigger caldera volcanos elsewhere on the globe.

The Haleakala is not really asleep, since it last excavated around 1790 (since the year 1000 it has excavated at least 10 times), and it is also not a real craters, but the rest of two erosion dales, which are partly full of erosion from recent erosion. Nevertheless, the'crater' of Haleakala is a huge place, large enough to enclose the entire island of Manhattan.

A trail leads 3000 foot down from the edge of the craters to kilometres of footpaths and huts, which are available for board. The name Haleakala means "House of the Sun" and was initially only valid for the east summit. Maui, the demi-god, according to Polish legends, caught the star here and compelled her to delay her voyage across the skies to give his tribe more light in the day.

The name Haleakala is now used throughout the area.
