As of 2021, David Ige will sign a bill banning the marketing of sunscreens containing oxybenzene and Octinoxat on the isles. Gov. David Ige on Tuesday subscribed Senate Bill 2571, which bans the selling or distributing of any sunscreens containing the chemical oxygen zone and/or oxinoxate in Hawaii to anyone without a decree from a licensed healthcare provider. No...
This bill is aimed at protecting Hawaii's algae riffs from oxybenzene and Octinoxat, which has been scientifically proven to help bleach the reef. The Hawaiian government is the first to adopt this kind of law, which will enter into force on January 1, 2021. Hedgehog recognised that there are many other contributory forces to the degradation of the reef, among them the invasion of marine life, terrestrial contamination and climatic changes.
Some testimonies quoted a lack of proof that supports the effect of these chemicals ofacorals, claiming prohibiting certain sunscreen products discourages poeple from using any guards, and is therefore more prone to melanoma, and arguing that taking several sunscreen products off the bus. Opponents of the law included the Hawaii Food Industry Association, ABC Stores and the Hawaii Medical Association.
"This will harm domestic retail by empowering customers to buy their favourite sunscreen products on-line, where it is unlikely that this bill will be enforceable," said Lauren Zirbel, CEO of the Hawaii Food Industry Association, in a letter of opposition to the bill. He said that the consumer will adapt to the changes and that the diversity of sunscreen products available in shops will not drastically alter for the now.
"I wish it would be working in the morning, but that's a good deal because it allows the big sun protection companies that produce sun protection products to re-formulate their products and have more on the markets that do not contain oxybenzene and octinoxate," Bishop said. The only way to know whether or not the two sun protection products contain the sun protection products is to verify the labelling.
The Bishop company advises the purchase of non-absorbent minerals and avoids the use of aerosols in the sun. More information about oxybenzene and octinoxate-free suntan lotions can be found on the Environmental Working Group's website on the subject of sun protection. They provide research results and give advice for the purchase of alternatives to sun protection products.
