Grecian alphabet was used by Johannes Bayer around 1600 to name the brightest star. Principle was to call them in order of magnitude, but the rules are mostly broken, the terms also depend on the position of asterisks within their constellations and other only Bayer known elements.
The Greek character is followed by the Roman fossil Vega, the alpha stellar of the lyre, which becomes alpha-lyrae, and so on. Desk, Tisch von The Ever- Changing Sky, J. B. Kaler, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, Cambridge, 1996.
