Gilbert Islands
The Gilbert IslandsThe Gilbert Islands
A further way to group the Gilbert Islands are the former counties of Northeast, Middle and Southeast Gilbert (Tarawa used to be a distinct county). The islands and atols are in order of importance (grouped by former counties): Compared to the Gilberts in the centre and South the rainfall in the Arctic is higher in the Arctic, which allows the growing of a broader cultural area.
Growing tara or babaí (Colocasia esculenta) was traditionally simpler in the north of Gilbert due to higher groundwater levels and rain. Micronesians lived on the islands for thousands of years (at least 2,000 years, probably 3,000). From the beginning to the middle of the twentieth centuries, the main sources of Gilbert Islanders' livelihoods were the phosphorus produced from the resources on Banaba (Ocean Island), an islet in the western Gilbert Islands.
Furthermore, on some islands there have been grown palm trees. Sanitation by the British contributed significantly to the improvement of the general standard of life on most islands. The Gilberteses were 84% educated and willing to respond to the colony's educative work. The entire training on the islands was supervised by the Colonial EduDepartment, whose aim was to train local young people to work in administration and trade and to standardise the standard of training throughout the area.
Attempting to create a market by developing three antolls, the Phoenix Islands Settlement Scheme was the last effort of colonisation within the British Empire. In 1831-1908 Hiram Bingham II was the first to have the Bible translated into Gilbert and to write anthems for the Gilbertese.
