In 2000, the French Polynesia region's total number of inhabitants was 249,110, with an average year on year increase of 1.78 per cent. Extensive community healthcare has ensured a long lifespan - 74.79 years at childbirth - and a low baby death ratio - of 9.3 per 1,000 births. Yearly migration rates -3.14 per 1,000 inhabitants are mainly borne by French civil servants and pensioners.

The under-15s make up 30 per cent of the total and 65 per cent between 15 and 64 years of life. On the other hand, the other 5 per cent are over 65 years old. Polynesians are 54 per cent of Protestants, 30 per cent Roman-Catholic, 16 per cent belong to other faiths.

Both Tahitian and French are the main language versions.

Polynesia-French -

It' s not hard to find potable on both the Windward and Society Islets. The smaller ones have very confined waters and a few do not at all, but all populated islets have a spring and the natives are usually more than lucky to part.

Use some French words and phrases to help you on your way. While French Polynesia is more costly than Europe and the USA for basic foodstuffs because of its isolation, purchasing is possible on a cost. The Papeete is the first place from Panama that cruiser parts and single persons can do ship repairs.

The best option is to use an internationally available prepaid credit or debit-card that is issued by the postal service.

In French Polynesia, the mobile phone provider is "Vini". They can do pay-as-you-go; buy a $5 or $10 phone key and then put in the cash you need (although buying a phone key can be difficult). In French Polynesia, the cells are accessible unexpectedly well, even in Tuamotus. Yangiroa, North Fakarava, Makemo, Manihi, Tikehau and maybe a few others when anchoring near a postal station (see Vinispot following).

"The French Polynesian Mail's Vivispot" (www.vinispot. pf) is active on all those archipelagoes where there is a local mail station, including some of the most remote outlying archipelagos such as the Australians and Gambier. Marquesas are ok, e.g. FATA HIVA (Hanavave Bay or Bay of Virgins) with a great Winispot-sound. Also Taiohae Bay.

They can buy tickets at the postal service or register on-line with a debit cardhold. You can also use your admission ticket to the free local mail computer at many postal services. "HotSpot-WDG ": this is another WiFi network with WiFi areas on all Society Island, Nuku Hiva, Hiva Oa and Ua Po in the Marquesas and Manihi, Rangiroa, Fakarawa and Tikehau in Tuamotu.

They can register on-line with a debit or debit or buy tickets at their WiFi network terminals such as a hotel, guesthouse or marina (see the website's homepage). Cruise ships can also use this private WiFi network, which is operated by a third party connected to the yacht. It has WIFI areas on all Society Isles, Nuku Hiva and Hiva Oa in the Marquesas, Rangiroa and Fakarawa in Tuamotu and Mangareva in Gambier.
