The beaches of French Polynesia are among the most dramatic in the whole canyon. Polynesia is an area of France in the South Pacific. The area consists of well over 100 archipelagos and islets, and consists of six large groups of islands: the Marquesas, the Tuamotu Archipelago, the Gambier Isles, the Austral Isles, the Basin Isles and, perhaps most famously, the Society Isles, which includes Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora.
Featuring so many South Pacific Isles and plains, it is clear why French Polynesia is known for its beaches - some of which are quite untouched and yet well-connected. All but a few but a few of them are enclosed by shallow water and therefore there are only a few beaches. Apart from the Marquesas, which are almost free of corals, most island (and all but a few resorts) have bath-like pools lying on whitish-coralline sand covered with palm trees.
The beaches in French Polynesia are the Society Islands, the Marquesas Islands, the Gambier Islands, the Tuamotus and the Austral & Bass Islands. Tahiti, along with Moorea and Bora Bora, is the most easily reachable of the Society Islands and, as most French-Polynesian routes in Papeete have to transfer to Tahiti, the most easily reachable in the region.
Tahiti's beaches can be overcrowded, and many of the better beaches have been turned into resorts. However, a few beaches open to the public are definitely deserving a look. Toaroto plague, in the west part of the peninsula just off Papeete, is a half a millimetre of sands.
Whilst many visitors come to the sandy beaches, the islands dark sandy beaches, such as Papenoo in the northern part and Papera in the southern part, are more naturally and less overcrowded. Reachable by boat from Tahiti, the city of Morea has more open, less sophisticated beaches than Tahiti. Most of the island's best beaches are situated in the northeast of the mainland, at Hauru Point - and therefore resort locations.
