There' s so many different ways to get soaked on Fraser Island. There is no island without a long, slow swim in the wonderful water of McKenzie Mountain, a sea filled only with rain water and surrounded by clean blank sands. On the outskirts of Hammerstone Beach, Wabby is the island most deep sea and when the light is shining it is difficult to withstand the cold, emerald green deep.
You can hike along its promenade and then swim with the currents to the water. Another top cooling spots is Champagne Pools, where the waves plunge over a row of cliffs into a quiet but bubbling cliff basin below the promontory at the north tip of the island.
Fraser Island Great Walk is a 90km walk that meanders between Dilli Village and Happy Valley, past most of the island's attractions, including Lake McKenzie, Wanggoolba Creek, Lake Wabby and the mighty rain forest forests of the Valley of the Giants. On Fraser Island, all four-wheel drive vehicles are made of fine sands.
There are a number of possible routes, or you can rent your own bike kit on the island or in Hervey Bay. The majority of visitors go directly to the huge sand beach, also known as 75 Mile Beach on the east side of the island, but it is also rewarding to take the scenic journey into the interior of the Central Lakes (about two hours), the peaks of which are Pile Valley with its high, level satineyes, Lake McKenzie and Lake Wabby with views of Lake Wabby and Stonetool Sand Blow.
Fraser Island's rugged nightscapes take on a whole new dimension, with many of the locals coming to the game after sunset. Accompany a guide on a long evening stroll that illuminates the bush and tree to see sugars gliding through the tops of the tree, scarce aquatic species on the shore of the lakes and other savage creatures rushing through the bush.
For all budgets, Fraser Island offers shelters. You can rent your four-wheel drive and if you really want to go back to the countryside, you can park behind the sand dune on the east or west beach. Brisbane is about 300 kilometers northern of Brisbane and 15 kilometers off the coasts of Hervey Bay and Maryborough.
Then you can take the boat to Fraser Island. 4x4 to Fraser Island, take a boat from Inskip Point at the north end of Rainbow Beach (1 hr 40 min from Hervey Bay ) or River Heads (20 min from Hervey Bay).
