Firm Island Farms Reserve Restoration Final Project

Fir Island Farms Estuary Restoration is situated in the WDFW Snow Goose Reserve on Fir Island in the Skagit River Delta. It will reset approximately 5,800 ft of an exisiting dyke and rehabilitate 131 acre of intertidal sump and canals. They are important for young Cinook.

The WDFW worked in close cooperation with Consolidated and Diking District 22 to make sure that the ultimate design met the district's flooding and rural sanitation requirements. Work on the viability of this spacecraft began in 2011 and WDFW expects it to be completed in autumn 2016. Skagit is the biggest stream that flows to Puget Sound and is home to all five indigenous types of fish, but since 1800 some 72 per cent of the historical habitats of the tide bogs have been wasted.

The German authorities in 1999 enumerated the Chinook fish population in Puget Sound â" included those in Skagit River â" for Endangered Species Act conservation. In the 2005 rebuilding scheme for the Skagit River Chinook, the regeneration of the estuaries' habitats was set as the top prioritisation for the regeneration of these population.

It will be based on other conservation work in the Danube River and will make a significant contribution to the recreation of the Skagit River Chinook and benefit other marine and animal life. It is a vital living space with lower salt content and provides salmons with nourishment and refuge to improve their chances of surviving in Puget Sound and the Pacific Ocean.

Since the end of the 19th century, agriculture has been practised in the Skagit Delta, considered one of the most fertile and precious agrarian areas in the whole canyon. Fir Island Farm is an example of how community farmers and the state can work together to create a scheme that will produce salt while maintaining agronomy.

Between October and April, the reservation draws ten thousand birds every year.
