As Fiji is a wonderful tropic wondrous country, it is no wonder that it has attracted the attention of many filmmakers from Hollywood and beyond. Several films have been shot in Fiji or have played part of their history. Would you like to spend a holiday in Fiji with a different experience by choosing some of these travel locations?
A number of great movies were made on the Yasawa Islands, which date back to the 1930'. The most remarkable movie, the 1949 movie The Blue Lagoon, was made on the islands Sawa-i-lau. It follows two kids who are wrecked on an isle. A few years later, a remakes of this movie was made in the Yasawas with Brooke Shields on Nanuya Levu.
Castaway was one of the greatest movies ever made in Fiji, with Tom Hanks in the leading role. The picture was taken on the wonderful island of Monuriki, which belongs to the Mamanucas group. Whilst many of the Mamanuca Islands are full of tourist destinations and amenities, the island of Monuriki is small and deserted, as you can see in the flick.
They can take you on a sightseeing trip to the islands, where you will be shown some of the most important places in the picture, and your local guides will tell you a little about the'making of'. It is interesting to listen how a whole team of films manages to come to the islands and handle the circumstances!
1954 the legendary Burt Lancaster set off for the movie His Majesty O'Keefe to the capital Vitu Levu. The picture was taken at various places on the archipelago, e.g. Pacific Harbour. Savage Iceland, with Tommy Lee Jones in the leading role, was also filmed in this area, using the untouched water and banks.
The Suva was also the setting for many movies. A part of His Majesty O'Keefe was killed as a historical Grand Pacific Hotel standing at the Victoria Parade. Take a walk along the Cumming Street, one of Suva's busiest places, which was also one of His Majesty O'Keefe's places.
