Kiribati, Fanning Island - cheap cruise, last-minute cruise, last minute cruise, last day cruise
Away from the well-trodden paths, Fanning Island is a secluded, nice refuge with just over 1,300 people. The natives call it "Tabaueran", a Kiribati term that means "heavenly footprint". It is an island of atolls - a ring-shaped wall of reefs surrounding a sanctuary of lagoons. A barbecue on the shore, volley -ball and cycling are some of the relaxing island pursuits on offer.
Schedule and information about the destinations
The Tabuaeran (also known as Fanning Island or Fanning Toll - both the British and Gilbert nicknames are recognised by Kiribati's constitution) is one of the lineage islands of the Pacific Ocean. It' an eagle at 3° 51? The Tabuaeran has 1,900 inhabitants, mainly colonists of Fanning Island Plantations, Ltd. who were taken from Kiribati to work in the coir industries (copra is the flesh of the coconut).
Its most important export goods are coppra and handicrafts (e.g. cauri shells, shark's teeth knifes and Kiribati stamps). Tabuaeran, however, is a one-week call harbour for the Honolulu-based Norway Star (Norwegian Cruise Line). Tabuaeran is about 900 nautical mile away, one of the nearest areas to the Hawaii Islands, and the Polynesians, who first populated Hawaii, may have used the area as a stop.
Artefacts have been found indicating a possible early settlement by Polynesian populations - probably the Cook Islands or Tonga. It was first mapped and renamed after the American captain Edmund Fanning on the USS Betsy on November 6, 1798. In those days the island was not inhabited and, like all other islands, has no real indigenous inhabitants.
