Falls River, Bristol Council, southwest of Massachusetts, USA, located on the eastern shores of Mount Hope Bay, at the estuary of the Taunton River, 18 mile ('29km) southwest of Providence, Rhode Island. Plenty of water power, a beautiful harbor and a humid atmosphere promoted the mills in the old part of the country as early as 1811, and already in 1871 the old village was a major cotton-textile-center.
During the infamous 1892 axe assassination case against Lizzie Borden, who was cleared of chopping her dad and step-mam. During the twenties and thirties many factories were shut down, but despite the continuing relocation of factories from the region, the textiles and garment industry remains the city's main sources of work.
The historic exhibit of Batheship is a World Wars II bomber, a U-boat, a replica of the HMS Bounty sailboat, the Massachusetts USS warship ( "the state' s offical monument of war") and other vessels; the Naval Museum is also there. Near the bay is the Fall River Heritage State Park (1984).
