Hangar Roa, Easter Island

The article this weeks feature in the world' s meteorological and climatic show shows Hanga Roa, Easter Island (click for a Yahoo! map link). Hangaroa is the capitol of Easter Island (aka Rapa Nui or Isla de Pascua), an area of Chile. The Easter Island is a small island in the southeast Pacific, known for the monumental man-made sculptures known as mai.

It was named after the discoverer Jacob Roggeveen, the first known Dutchman to arrive there on Easter Sunday in 1722. Hangar Roa, on the south-west coastline of Easter Island, is at 27°S. It is almost 1,300 leagues eastward of Pitcairn Island, the closest populated island, and almost 2,200 leagues eastward of Chile, making Easter Island one of the most remote populated island in the hemisphere.

In 2002 the number of inhabitants of Hanga Roa was 3,791, which represents 87% of the total island inhabitants. It also has an international airfield (the only one on the island) and a multi-purpose arena where the island's soccer club is located. Hanga Roa is situated in the subtropical and on the coastline of a small island, the temperatures remain relatively stable throughout the year. Rainfall is high, but not as high as on the southwest Pacific isles. At present in the hemispheric autumn, Hanga Roa expects heights around 77 F, depths around 68 F, and a light opportunity of raining every morning of this working days (personally I think that could be a little dull after a while.... but it could be a beautiful place to visit).
