Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful fortified towns in the whole wide area. Bold seafarers, hard-working traders and clever embassies, the Dubrovnik civilians became exceedingly wealthy, led a demanding lifestyle and appreciated sophistication and art. In addition to the beach, the unspoilt ocean, casual restaurants with first-class shellfish, fancy five-star hostels and adventurous sport resorts, your vacation is perfect.

Dubrovnik has also been a favourite shooting spot in recent years. But the disadvantage is that the most of the local people sell their property for tourist purposes and move to the present-day Lapad area. In this way, the old part of the city is little more than an empty market.

While the number of permanent residents in the Old Town has fallen from 5,000 (1991) to 500 (2014), the number of tourists has risen at an exponential rate - there is even talk of restricting the number of persons who can visit the Old Town during the high seasons.

The number of visitors is constantly increasing, and in 2013 the number of Dubrovnik boarding and departing vessels rose to over one million for the first year. Dubrovnik is overrun by tourist during the high seasons from July to August - hotels, bars, restaurants in Dubrovnik and the beach are full, and there are lines at all the major tourist sites, but on the positive side there is the Dubrovnik Summer Festival and a glittering night life.

Off-peak, November to April, can be nice, although most establishments are locked and the wheather is less dependable. While in February some places for the carnival are reopened, the new seasons only start at Easter.

There are two monuments, Pile (to the west) and Plo?e (to the east), which act as gateways to the old city and are connected by the Stradun highways. On 1 July 2013 the Croatian government acceded to the EU, but will not introduce the euro in the near-term. Nudist culture is acceptable on some remote sands.
