I' ve only just come back last months from Bora Bora, Moorea, Rangiroa and Tahiti, and it was the most astonishing journey ever! Rarotonga, the principal isle, is similar in terms of scale and type to Moorea, but with more to do and to see, also a capital and a small nightlife. It is a small, calm and mostly shallow area.
It is unbelievable! After 5 days on Moorea, our trip to FP continued on a number of islands. After spending the whole afternoon on the Laguna in Aitutaki, it was great. In Aitutaki, if you are staying overnight, I would ask what to do in the motel and what not if you have to get off on the Laguna.
We' re also in loving the area and are thinking of a return to the South Pacific, but this year to Fiji. Like Rarotonga, as Rarotonga said, Moorea is very similar, even has a few moto' s like Moorea. It is very similar to the FP Atoll. It is less touristic than FP.
Aitutaki' s informal style is what I like. TripAdvisor forum postings can be processed for a brief while. At the end of the editing timeframe, contributors can refresh their submissions by deleting and newposting them. TripAdvisor forum postings can be processed for a brief while.

I' ve been to both, and my own view is that although Rarotonga (and Aitutaki) are great, NOTHING is better than Polynesia! As Rarotonga has a much nearer one than Tahiti or Moorea, the laguna is smaller in many places; in my experiences the seal life on Moorea is much better for snorkelling.
Rarotonga's night life is better for youngsters than Tahiti or Moorea; much more to do.
