Park Australia has partnered with Google to show one of the country's most amazing nature experiences. Situated in the Indian Ocean, 350 km southern of Java, Christmas Island is home to 45 million Christmas Island shrimps that are now on their way to breeding once a year.
Park Australia and Google will chart the shellfish migrations that David Attenborough once described as one of the "most amazing sights" in the globe for Google Maps Street View. More than 30 hrs will be spent by Dr. Alasdair Grigg, Parks Australia's Parks and Island Specialist, towing a 20 kg tractor (a handheld camcorder unit) through isolated parts of the island during the cartography work.
Google's softwares mix the pictures into a definitive 360-degree image and record the "spectacular" spawn of the shrimp on December 13. Lisa Preston, President of the Christmas Island Tourist Association, said she hoped the scheme would result in an increased presence internationally, increasing the number of tourists visiting the island from the 500 or so that each year.
"Nowhere else in the whole wide globe will you find anything like Christmas Island - and who better than Google to help us get the word across," she said. Parks Australia spokesperson Miranda Schooneveldt said that not only the remainder of the globe - but also the Australians - would be inspired by online travel to do so.
"If we can spread this word, it will help protect the island and Google understands and respects this message," she said. Whether Christmas Island will catch the same Attentio remains to be seen.
Christmas Island is home to about 45 million shrimps - the only place in the whole wide variety where they can be found. The migration begins with the beginning of the rainy period (usually October to December) and depends on the moon phases - and the resulting high water. Can' be eating shrimp.
