Today it is the only one, a striking Chatham symbol. A weathered wooden front doors opens directly into a small room that also serves as a lounge and canteen. There are two large couches and three armchairs occupying a large part of the base and the souvenirs of a long lifetime are placed on shelving and on the wall.
There is a basic galley lining the far away walls, where a stove is one of the few contemporary equipment. It is not possible to run a refrigerator or deepfreeze and Helen says that every piece of meats or every piece of seafood lasts only three whole nights. The sunlight provides enough lighting to read historical literature at nights - it prefers facts, not fictions, and NZ Life & Leisure.
