During a recent Caribbean cruise, I registered my hosts for the cruise company's outings. It is obvious that the trips provided by the cruise companies are expensive. However, whether it makes business or not will depend on what you plan to do and which island you will be on.

The harbours are usually the big attraction on Mediterranean trips (think of Nice, Barcelona, Venice). Bridgetown on Barbados, Castries on St. Lucia and St. John's on Antigua are among the less interesting ones. They are both within comfortable walk of their cruise ship terminal.

It is enticing to go on land during the day in the warm, sun-drenched Caribbean. Their cruise line is on a cruise to a sandy stretch, but on some isles you can just as simply take a bustran. On St. Lucia, for example, boats stop near the central coach station, from where regular busses take the 20-minute drive to Rodney Bay's Reduit Strand, the best on the Isle.

Arrange a price right at the beginning: taxis in the Caribbean are seldom measured. A lot of cabs are offering trips on insular routes and can create information-guide. Explore what to see and do on the isles you visit and how to get around before you leave the house (Wi-Fi on boat can be unreliable).

Most Caribbean Isles allow you to use US Dollar.
