Capt. James Cook FRS (7 November 1728[NB 1] - 14 February 1779) was a UK discoverer, Navigator, Cartographer and Captain of the Royal Navy. He did extensive mapping of Newfoundland before making three trips to the Pacific Ocean, reaching the first ever record of Europe's contacts with the east coast of Australia and the Hawaii Islands and New Zealand's first record of circumnavigating the globe.
He became a teenage member of the Royal Naval Service and entered the Royalavy in 1755. That contributed to drawing the admiralty and Royal Society's and the Royal Society's interest to Cook. The news came at a decisive time in Cook's carrier and the heading of UK ocean reconnaissance and in 1766 resulted in his assignment as commandant of HM Bark Endeavour for the first of three Pacific missions.
On three journeys Cook travelled through largely unknown areas of the earth for thousand of kilometres. From New Zealand to Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean, he cartographed countries in greater detail and on an unprecedented scale. 2. On his expeditions he measured and designated characteristics for the first case and captured the island and coastline on a map of Europe.
In 1779, Cook was assaulted and murdered on his third expedition in the Pacific as he attempted to abduct the Hwaiian chieftain Kalani??pu?u to retrieve a boat from one of his vessels. Cook's crew's post-mortem itinerary is shown as a dotted line.
He almost hit the Antarctic continent, but turned to Tahiti to supply his vessel again. At this stage of the journey he took along a young Tahitian called Omai, who knew less about the Pacific than Tupaia did on the first trip. In 1774, on his way back to New Zealand, Cook arrived on the Friendly Islands, Easter Island, Norfolk Island, New Caledonia and Vanuatu.
After spending a whole month there, Cook tried to recommence his investigation of the North Pacific. A group of Hawaiians, unidentified, took one of Cook's small boots. He was compelled into a frenzied geese hunt, which ended in frustration when he returned to the boat. The artist also made Cook's first journey.
4 ][74] Cook's second exploration comprised William Hodges, who created remarkable landscapes of Tahiti, Easter Island and other places. A number of Cooke' s senior officer moved on to special duties. Cook's Sailor William Bligh took over the HMS Bounty in 1787 to set out for Tahiti and come back with breadfruits.
George Vancouver, one of Cook's ensigns, took a journey of discovery to the Pacific coast of North America from 1791 to 1794. On his third outing under Cook, George Dixon later ordered his own. 77 ] A lieutenant under Cook, Henry Roberts, spends many years after this journey with the preparation of detailled maps, which was included in Cook's posthuman atlas released around 1784.
Cook's contribution to science was recognized throughout his life. Benjamin Franklin in 1779, while the US settlements fought for their autonomy, sent a letter to the masters of the naval ships of colonisation at sea suggesting that if they came into touch with Cook's ship, "they should not regard it as an adversary, nor should they have suffered a looting of the effect it had, nor hinder their immediate comeback to England by arresting them or send them to any other part of Europe or to America; but that they would send said captain Cook and his nation with all courtesy and genial...
